Anna was thrilled when Molly told her about the christening. ‘I’d have liked you to be one of his godmothers,’ Molly said once the arrangements had been made, ‘but seeing as how you’re not RC, Father McLaughlin says you can be a Christian witness, and that’s just as good in my eyes.’

During the week that followed, Anna had little time to think about anything but work. For one horrible week, the last in May, Germany’s flagship, Bismarck, dominated the seas and on the night of the twenty-fourth it sank HMS Hood, the pride of the British navy. The loss of almost fifteen hundred men plunged the ops room into a desperate bid to seek revenge, and two nights later in the Denmark Straits victory was theirs when the HMS Dorsetshire sent the Bismarck to the bottom of the ocean.

Anna had rejoiced with the rest of the team in Derby House, and the next Sunday as she stood in St Joseph’s Church with Molly and her family, she gave a special thanks to God. Her eyes moistened and she swallowed a lump in her throat as Lily placed Ronan in her arms. He gave her a gummy smile before she handed him to Mavis who then passed him to Robert. He stepped forward, smart in his best grey flannel suit, and taking his role as godfather very seriously, he placed his nephew in the priest’s large hands. Father McLaughlin sonorously intoned the time-honoured words and tenderly applied the oil and water. Ronan let out a roar that made everyone laugh.

‘There now,’ said his grandmother as the priest gave Molly her howling son, ‘he’s one of us in the family of our Good Lord.’ Relief shone in Kitty’s eyes and her beaming smile, and as the sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows behind the altar bathed the party of worshippers in its golden glow, Anna felt that she also was now a member of the most loving, wonderful family on earth. Choking back tears, she joined her friends and neighbours in congratulating Molly and Ronan. Despite the terror of war and the sadness all around them, life had never felt so good.
